Trenching
The construction process for digging trenches with large machinery typically involves several steps, and at AGS, we know what to do, how to do it, and how to do it safely.
- Determine the trench specifications, including depth, width, and length, based on project requirements and engineering design.
- Obtain necessary permits and ensure compliance with local regulations and utility locates to avoid damage to underground utilities.
- Assess the soil conditions and plan appropriate safety measures, such as shoring or sloping, to prevent cave-ins.

Mobilization and Equipment Setup:
- Bring the required machinery to the site, such as excavators, trenchers, or backhoes, depending on the scale of the project.
- Ensure that the machinery is in good working condition and properly maintained.
- Set up the machinery, including adjusting the bucket or attachment, ensuring proper hydraulic functions, and installing any necessary safety features.
Marking and Excavation:
- Mark the trench alignment on the ground, following the engineering plans or design specifications.
- Position the machinery at the starting point of the trench and begin excavation.
- Use the machinery to dig the trench to the specified depth and width, removing soil and any obstructions encountered.
Sloping, Benching, or Shoring:
- Assess the soil conditions and determine the appropriate method for supporting the trench walls to prevent collapse.
- If necessary, slope the trench walls at a safe angle or create benches or steps to provide stability.
- Install shoring systems, such as trench boxes, sheet piles, or hydraulic shores, to support the trench walls if the soil conditions require it.
Material Handling and Disposal:
- Load excavated soil or debris into dump trucks or hauling equipment for removal from the site.
- Follow proper procedures for handling and disposing of excavated material in compliance with local regulations and environmental considerations.
Inspection and Quality Control:
- Conduct regular inspections during trenching to ensure compliance with design specifications and safety requirements.
- Monitor the trench dimensions, slope angles, and installed shoring systems to verify their effectiveness.
- Address any issues or deviations promptly to maintain construction quality and safety.
Backfilling and Compaction:
- Once the necessary utilities, pipelines, or structures are installed in the trench, backfill the excavated area with suitable material.
- Compact the backfill material in layers to achieve adequate compaction and stability.
- Ensure proper compaction methods, such as compaction equipment or water saturation, are employed to achieve the required soil density.
Site Cleanup and Restoration:
- Remove construction debris, excess material, and machinery from the site.
- Restore the area surrounding the trench, including grading the surface, reseeding or replanting vegetation, and repairing any damages caused during the trenching process.
It’s crucial to prioritize safety, follow proper trenching practices, and comply with relevant regulations and standards throughout the trenching process. AGS employs a skilled team and provides adequate training, supervision, and protective measures to ensure its workers’ well-being and the project’s successful completion.
